Going natural is like embarking on a journey, the same can be said for being alive. |
Every naturalista knows the struggle of natural hair. Our hair demands so much time, attention, products and -depending how serious you are -an entire lifestyle change. Lately I've been thinking that we invest so much on hair and I thought do we do the same for people? How can it be that the amount of time, energy and care we give to our glorious wavy, kinky, coily, springy locks is something we cannot do for the people around us? This thought popped up when my classmate painted a woman with Natural Hair.
After looking at the painting and contemplating how we treat it compare to people I came to the conclusion that Natural Hair can be an allegory to the ideal way we should treat people and I became inspired to write this poem. I hope you enjoy it and see the link that i attempted to portray between hair and people. |
Poem: Natural hairNatural hair seems to represent strength. One look and you think POWERFUL. Although the look of power is immense. The truth is its fragile. Natural hair is a handful and needs much care So we invest on products for hair To deep-condition , moisturize, seal and such Yes, our hair needs much care Time to time as we all know our hair disrespects us From shrinkage, looking a mess or hitting a plateau With all our efforts and money on products It still behaves badly or seems not to grow Yet we choose to give our hair what it needs to thrive So it can grow long, beautiful and healthy, All the tenderness in the world to make it look alive Just to make our kinky, coily, wavy, hair happy Why then can't we treat people like our hair Invest on them like we do our products Treat them with tenderness, patience, love and care Forgive them when they disrespect us. Just like every natural hair each grows differently So do people in their walks of life Just like all naturals has a different regimen So do the needs of every individual in this life |
